Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Caring for People Through Food
As Culinary Director at Montvale, I never chose senior living just because I loved to cook. I chose it because I loved caring for people. Over the years, I discovered that a meal can be so much more than food.
A meal can bring comfort. It can spark a memory. It can also remind someone they are seen and valued.
That purpose is what makes this work meaningful. The relationships built with residents bring depth to each day. Hearing their stories, celebrating life’s little moments, and brightening someone’s day give this work a purpose beyond a traditional restaurant.
Residents have also taught me important lessons about life. They have shown me that life is not measured by how busy we are. It is not only about how much we accomplish.
Instead, life is shaped by the relationships we build and the kindness we leave behind. Residents show resilience through loss and gratitude in small moments. Their stories, wisdom, and quiet strength remind me to slow down and listen.
One favorite tradition at Montvale is Happy Hour. It is amazing to watch the dining room transform as residents gather together. They laugh, socialize, enjoy great food and drinks, and simply spend time with one another.
For that hour, it is not just about the menu. It is about creating an atmosphere where friendships grow and memories are made. Everyone can feel a sense of community.
Seeing the smiles, conversations, and joy in the room is a meaningful reminder. Often, the best experiences are the simplest ones shared together.
Success in a senior living dining program begins with a genuine heart for serving others. Skill and experience are important, but compassion, patience, empathy, and consistency make the greatest impact. Every interaction is a chance to help someone feel respected, valued, and at home.
When team members lead with kindness, listen with intention, and notice small details, they do more than provide a service. They help create a community where residents can thrive.
One of the most rewarding moments is hearing residents say how much they love the food. Seeing them excited about a favorite meal, asking for seconds, or sharing compliments with the team is deeply meaningful.
Those moments show that this work matters. A thoughtfully prepared meal can bring comfort, create conversation, and give residents something to look forward to each day. Knowing that food has become a meaningful part of their lives is one of the greatest rewards of working in senior living.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
