Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Jane Sorenson, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.

Their willingness to reach out matters. They share their experiences and invite others into community life. In doing so, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at Montvale Senior Living, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Creating Comfort and Familiarity

A successful move-in experience begins with comfort and familiarity. At Montvale Senior Living, the goal is for each new resident to have their needs met quickly. They should feel supported by team members and Resident Ambassadors. They should also know they are now part of the Montvale family.

That sense of belonging does not happen in one moment. It grows through friendly introductions, helpful guidance, and steady support. These touchpoints help residents learn their new routines. When someone knows who to ask and where to go, the transition feels easier. It also helps to know who will welcome them.

Resident Ambassadors are an important part of that process. During the first week of each month, the Resident Services Director holds an ambassador meeting. During that meeting, ambassadors learn the names of new residents. From there, they take charge. They invite new residents to sit with them at meals. They encourage them to attend activities. Some even offer door-to-door advice to help them settle in.

Leading With Kindness and Acceptance

Sometimes, the simplest acts of kindness create the strongest connections. Ambassadors may help a new resident with the laundry machines. They may act as a meal buddy or walk the halls with them. These small gestures help new residents feel comfortable, welcomed, and less alone.

Ambassadors also attend the monthly New Resident Welcome Experience. There, they can offer advice and answer questions. They also provide camaraderie from a resident’s perspective. That peer support helps new residents feel understood. It comes from someone who knows daily life in the community.

Five senior residents smile brightly during a relaxed moment at Montvale Senior Living.

One meaningful example involves a Resident Ambassador with a background in coaching and physical education. He helped start a successful outdoor program for residents. He also involved several new residents right away. By inviting them into the program early, he gave them a chance to engage.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they feel comfortable with their peers. A fellow resident can offer understanding in a natural way. New residents may feel more at ease asking questions. They may also feel more comfortable joining activities or opening up.

Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of Montvale through kindness, acceptance, and connection. Their interactions with residents, team members, prospects, and one another help set the tone. As trusted peer leaders, they strengthen engagement and offer support. They also help create a connected community where residents feel welcomed, valued, and at home.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
