Finding the Perfect Balance

As Culinary Director at The Montvale Senior Living, I approach each day with passion—not just purpose. I face new challenges, hear new stories, and find fresh reasons to feel grateful. I’m excited to share how I arrived in this role, what fuels my dedication, and what a typical day looks like in our community. My work goes beyond preparing meals—it centers on building connections, creating purpose, and making a real difference where it counts.

I’ve always worked in restaurants and loved the fast-paced energy. However, when I stepped away from the industry for a time, I discovered I enjoyed a slower, more balanced rhythm. So, when I returned to culinary work, I found the perfect fit in senior living. This position gives me the excitement of a kitchen environment, but with a more relaxed service style and better work-life balance.

My time as Head Chef at a very busy restaurant prepared me well for this role. That experience taught me how to manage ordering, scheduling, and daily menu execution. Formal training in culinary school also helped me build confidence in both technique and problem-solving.

Meaningful Moments and Daily Purpose

What I enjoy most about senior living is the daily connection with residents. Having my grandmother live in the same community makes the experience even more special. Talking with residents and building relationships has been one of the most fulfilling parts of this job.

Each morning, I walk through the dining room and greet residents with a warm “good morning.” I ask how they’re doing and make time for conversation. For those who don’t have family nearby, I try to be a familiar face and a caring presence—just like I would for my own grandparents.

If you’re considering a culinary career in senior living, I offer this advice: have patience. You won’t please everyone every day, and that’s okay. What matters most is listening, staying open to feedback, and using it to improve both the food and the experience.

For me, success means serving meals that residents talk about long after the plates are cleared. When food brings joy, every bit of effort becomes worthwhile.

At the end of each day, I feel proud knowing I’ve contributed something meaningful—whether it’s a favorite dish, a heartfelt conversation, or a comforting moment. Thank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me to serve at your table. I’m truly honored.
