As Resident Services Director at The Montvale Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living. It turns a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the neighborhood isn’t just enjoyable — it is essential for joy, purpose, and well-being.
Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It also means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed activity, each moment strengthens relationships and helps residents feel they belong.
From my perspective, every interaction is a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully. They also benefit emotionally and socially from genuine human connection.
To me, community in senior living means a place where every resident feels welcome, supported, and safe. It’s a place of belonging and joy. It’s where friendships form, laughter fills the halls, and meaningful moments shape daily life.
Building connections matters because people are wired for connection. It’s how we learn, grow, and find purpose. When residents connect, they experience a deeper sense of belonging, and that energy spreads throughout the community.
I encourage engagement by offering meaningful events that support social, environmental, physical, intellectual, and spiritual wellness. With a wide range of opportunities, residents can choose what resonates with them. These moments open the door to new friendships and shared experiences.

At The Montvale Senior Living, we also stay connected to the surrounding town. We host on-site activities with local vendors who provide helpful services such as jewelry cleaning, manicures, podiatry care, ear cleaning, hearing aid checks, and therapy dog visits.
Residents also take part in monthly Acts of Service projects. They share kindness by delivering fresh-baked cookies to local businesses or donating items and funds to support organizations in the area. We also believe in intergenerational connection. Soon, we will partner with a local homeschool group so residents can enjoy story time and shared activities with children each month.
One of my favorite events is our weekly Friday Happy Hour. It features new entertainment every week — from jazz and blues to country, gospel, rock and roll, big band, fiddle, folk, a ukulele band, a flute choir, and even a magician and a ventriloquist. Our culinary team prepares a delicious spread for each gathering. Together, the music, food, and conversation create a lively atmosphere full of joy and connection.
We also take great care to welcome new residents. Each person receives a welcome bag with helpful information and small gifts. On the first Monday of each month, I host a New Resident Orientation to review important details and answer questions. My goal is simple: help every new resident feel informed, confident, and connected.
At the heart of Montvale, connections mean everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches daily life. As Resident Services Director, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to build these relationships transform our building into a true home. They create moments that residents and families will treasure.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events — we build a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. The connections we nurture make all the difference.
